If I had only one fly to take, anywhere in the world, this would be it.

Would you fly fish for smallmouth in the winter? There’s those that winter trout fish. There’s others that steelhead fish in icy waters in the early spring. Why not smallies? But not just any smallmouth water, I’m talking about below a power plant in the warm water plume that can be 55 -60 degrees all winter long - bath water.

Here’s a hot fly mimicking winter minnows - the old Grey/White Clouser.
Hats are here!

The third of February. Now is when winter starts to drag out in the north country. It’s been a cold winter, but last winter seemed colder. This year we’ve had enough snow and ice to allow for all the winter fun for which everyone dreams.
What do you do this time of year?
- Put your nose to the grindstone and get alot done?
- Experience the early symptoms of seasonal depression disorder?
- Try to figure out where to catch fish through a hole in the ice, as the early season patterns change?
- Tie some flies, even though the fishing season seems years away?
- Get ready to take off on a winter get-away?
- Prepare for the unemployment line and try to figure out when the economy will turn around?
- Start to plan for moments of extreme fun in the coming open water fishing season?
- Get to the health club and fight the big fight?
This time of year I dream.
-
I dream of budding aspen and hard running sap.
-
I dream of shimmering bonefish flats with periodic flashes of light as a tail fin breaks the surface.
-
I dream of surface dimples on an easy flowing stretch of prime water.
-
I dream of late winter prime cross-country skiing on hard tracks with a trace of fresh snow.
-
I dream of porpoising tarpon, daisy-chaining in the late afternoon.
-
I dream of a bobber popping in a slow decent on an early spring crappie bite.
Yes, I’ve got spring fever. And I’ve got it bad.
