Are Tubes for You?

Tubes.JPGAt the Great Waters Fly Fishing Show this weekend (in Bloomington, MN), I watched a tube fly tying demonstration and managed to coerce a couple from the tier. The flies are tied on a tube allowing one to thread your tippet through the tube and attach your hook to the mono. This apparatus positions next to the tube end while fishing. It allows for a smaller hook to be employed while the fly will travel up and away from the hook (and hooked fish) during the battle, decreasing the wear rate on the fly.
The key advantage in tube flies appears to be two-fold:
  • Smaller hook with less leverage against the fish than a traditional long shanked hook.
  • Increases fly since the fly generally moves away from fish, sliding up the line, and allows for the fly materials to be out of harm’s way.
These flies have been used for trout, steelhead, and salmon and are making there way into the warmwater ranks, showing TubeApparatus250.JPGup as pike, muskie, and bass flies.

The fly tying process involves specialized apparatus and materials available from Eumer, a Finish company providing materials, tying instruction and other related tube paraphernalia.

You can check out Eumer here. Take a look at these innovative flies and see if they’re right for you.
