I had the extreme pleasure of someone taking ME fishing yesterday. I’m always the one taking people out, but a local fish-hawk known as Kibber, kindly called and said he had a hot new lake. The whole experience reminded me why it’s important to try new venues. Many times they are a bust, but not this time.
This small lake in northcentral Minnesota somewhere receives little pressure and is tough to get into, complete with ominous mud puddles, ruts, and overgrowth, keeping all but the most ardent fisher folks out of the game.

This lake, while small - harbors a great population of nice northerns, bass, sunfish and supposedly crappies - which was my primary mission. Kibber had cleaned several northerns the day before and found large crappies in their bellies.
We found no crappies this time, but the northern pike and bass fishing (spinnerbaits) was exceptional. In the three hours we fished, we probably caught at least 20 northerns between 3 and 8 pounds. We caught largemouth between 1 1/2 and 4 1/2 pounds, and several busted our lures and got away.
A new lake or river is always an adventure, especially if it’s tough to get into. My buddy had the perfect mix of vehicle (Jeep) and boat (Grumman Sport Boat) to fit the bill.
This season, try that lake you’ve been meaning to try for years, and just never did. Look at a map of an area, key in on a couple of small, out-of-the-way lakes and give them a try.
You may find your new Secret Lake. Oh yeah, nice hat Kibber - you need a new one from Flybass.com!
